Our Story
Beyond Barriers – Restoring Lives began with a dream born from pain, resilience and a deep determination to create better outcomes for others.
The organisation was first registered in 2013, when Daniel and Tammy Cinzio set out to provide adventure therapy and suicide-prevention support to young people in Flagstone and surrounding communities in South East Queensland.
One of their first projects was the restoration of a weathered Pinnacle of Terror mobile climbing trailer. The trailer was completely stripped back, sandblasted and repainted before new climbing walls and equipment were installed.
It was a genuine community effort. A Browns Plains paint supplier donated the paint, while local volunteers contributed their time, trade skills and expertise to paint, assemble and engineer the trailer. Together, they returned this valuable mobile adventure-therapy resource to the road.
Bringing Adventure Therapy to Queensland
A significant turning point came when we visited Delhuntie Park in Victoria and witnessed its powerful work with young people.
We saw how its camp program helped participants build resilience, confidence, connection and hope. We believed a similar program could make a significant difference in Queensland, so we invited members of the Delhuntie Park team to train and support us.
They agreed, and together we began facilitating week-long outdoor adventure camps for community participants and groups referred through local high schools.
The camps welcomed young people facing many forms of pain, loss, trauma and addiction. Participants stepped away from technology, daily pressures and familiar routines to spend time together in the bush.
Activities included abseiling, hiking, swimming, campfire cooking, group games, personal-development sessions and opportunities to talk honestly about hurt and trauma. Throughout each camp, participants received encouragement, affirmation and practical support.
For many young people, the experience became a powerful reset. It helped them see themselves, their circumstances and their futures differently.
Responding to Change and Hardship
A series of difficult work-related and personal events eventually forced us to pause the adventure-therapy program. The arrival of COVID-19 created further disruption, and when our insurer ceased operating, we could no longer maintain the insurance required to facilitate the camps.
Although one chapter had temporarily closed, the need within our community had not disappeared.
We established an op shop and food-relief service in Flagstone, supplying a substantial range of fresh, frozen and shelf-stable food to almost 600 people each week.
This service continued for approximately two years, until the property was resumed and demolished to make way for the current ALDI shopping development.
During this period, Daniel and Tammy also separated and later divorced. Despite these significant personal and organisational changes, the work of Beyond Barriers continued.
Supporting People Experiencing Homelessness
Today, Daniel continues to lead Beyond Barriers – Restoring Lives Ltd alongside a faithful team of directors and volunteers.
Our focus is practical, direct assistance for people facing homelessness, financial hardship, trauma and social isolation.
Using two donated trucks, our team regularly visits sites where people experiencing homelessness are living throughout areas south and west of Brisbane. We distribute donated goods including:
Fresh fruit and vegetables
Shelf-stable food
Bedding and clothing
Tents and camping equipment
Household and personal-care items
Other practical supplies
We also help people gain access to basic electricity by installing suitable solar-power systems.
Another part of our work involves sourcing car parts at wholesale prices. Reliable transport can be essential for employment, medical appointments, education and daily survival, yet repair costs are often beyond the reach of people experiencing hardship. By reducing the cost of parts, we help make essential vehicle repairs more achievable.
Temporary Accommodation and Transport
An unexpected but important part of our work has been the development of a growing fleet of donated camper trailers, caravans, cars and a large bus.
Where appropriate, these vehicles and accommodation resources are loaned free of charge to people who do not have safe or stable housing.
Every donated vehicle or trailer represents more than a physical asset. It can provide shelter, mobility, security and a pathway toward greater stability.
Advocacy and Emergency Relief
Our work extends beyond distributing supplies.
We advocate for people experiencing homelessness at federal, state and local government levels. We seek to improve understanding of the conditions people are facing and to encourage practical, urgent and compassionate responses.
During Cyclone Alfred’s impact on South East Queensland, we received two donations totalling $10,000 for direct assistance to people experiencing homelessness.
We negotiated charitable pricing and purchased heavy-duty tarpaulins, poles, ropes and pegs. Every dollar was directed to relief supplies, which were distributed to people living outdoors through severe weather and extreme summer conditions.
These materials provided vital protection from storms, rain, wind and intense heat.
Building Community and Restoring Hope
We understand the power of community, practical assistance, adventure and hope.
For this reason, our work is not limited to meeting immediate physical needs. We also create opportunities for people to reconnect, experience joy and build supportive relationships.
Our activities have included:
Christmas celebrations
Water-skiing days
Beach and four-wheel-drive trips
Boating and nature experiences
Community gatherings
Outdoor adventure activities
These experiences can be especially valuable for people living with depression, trauma, grief and isolation. A positive experience, a safe community and the knowledge that someone genuinely cares can become the first step toward lasting change.
We remain firmly committed to providing those opportunities.
Our Faith and Values
Beyond Barriers is non-denominational and is not controlled by any particular church or religious organisation. We welcome and assist people of all backgrounds, beliefs and circumstances.
Our work is shaped by faith in God, whom we understand as a faithful Father and provider. This faith has carried us through hardship and continues to motivate us to serve people with dignity, generosity and compassion.
We do not require the people we assist to share our beliefs. Our purpose is to offer practical help, hope and genuine human connection wherever it is needed.
Governance and Charitable Status
Beyond Barriers – Restoring Lives Ltd is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and holds Deductible Gift Recipient status.
We are supported by volunteers, community members, businesses and donors who believe in practical action and compassionate service.
Our reputation has been built through faithful, transparent and honest dealings. Because of this trust, people regularly approach us with donations, resources and opportunities to assist others.
Looking Ahead
We are working toward restoring and expanding our adventure-therapy and suicide-prevention programs.
Our future plans include purchasing:
A large Zodiac-style boat
Two suitable tow vehicles
Outdoor adventure and camping equipment
Equipment required to safely operate intervention camps
Additional resources for regional and remote outreach
Our vehicles travel tens of thousands of kilometres each year. This includes delivering supplies, visiting homeless camps and helping people relocate caravans, trailers and other forms of mobile accommodation.
Daniel’s LandCruiser, now more than 20 years old, continues to work exceptionally hard. His smaller boat is also used regularly to give people the opportunity to experience the peace and beauty of Queensland’s lakes and rivers.
We hope to expand these trips to include snorkelling, visits to uninhabited islands, river exploration and other safe outdoor experiences.
These activities are not simply recreational. They can help people living with trauma, depression and hardship rediscover confidence, connection and a sense of possibility.
How We Are Funded
Our principal operating costs include:

These expenses are met primarily through the generosity of individuals, families, community groups and businesses.
Some supporters contribute $20 each week, while others provide larger monthly or annual donations. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps us respond directly and practically to someone in need.
Community Speaking
Daniel has spoken at many community and church organisations, including Rotary, Quota, Probus, My House and other local groups.
He speaks about the realities of homelessness, trauma, hardship and community need. He also shares his personal journey of moving through life-altering adversity and finding renewed purpose through serving others.
His goal is to increase understanding, challenge assumptions and inspire people to take practical action.
Our Vision for the Future
In the years ahead, we plan to expand our suicide-prevention initiatives, intervention camps and adventure-therapy programs.
We hope to bring these services, along with practical assistance and community support, to regional and outback towns throughout Australia.
What began as a dream in the hearts and minds of a young couple has grown into a recognised and deeply valued organisation that makes a practical difference in the lives of people throughout Brisbane and surrounding communities.
The circumstances have changed, and the methods have evolved, but the purpose remains the same: to move beyond barriers, restore lives and offer hope where it is needed most.
